All 911 call centers throughout the state have been upgraded to the newest system

(Springfield-jm) – All 911 call centers throughout the state have been upgraded to the newest system, which the Illinois State Police said will make communications more reliable and equitable. In a news release sent out Monday morning, State Police said all 169 Public Safety Answering Points or PSAPs, which are commonly known as 911 call centers, have officially transitioned to Next Generation 911. Officials said NG911 is a secure, IP-based infrastructure which is designed to support modern communications. The upgrade is meant to give people more efficient and reliable 911 services. Previously, 911 calls were routed based on the location of a cell tower, and not the location of the caller. NG911, on the other hand, uses geospatial call routing, based on the caller’s actual location, State Police said.

(Springfield-jm) – Illinois House Democrats passed a proposal Thursday to help lower homeowner and auto insurance rates. The proposal would require insurance companies to give homeowners at least 60 days notice before nonrenewal, changes in coverage and premium increases over 10%. Insurers could also have to use state-specific data to set rates for homeowners. The Illinois Department of Insurance would be responsible for ensuring auto rates are not excessive, inadequate or unfairly discriminatory. The Department of Insurance would also be able to review filings, issue orders and require rebates if the rates are found unfair. Illinois Republicans believe the changes could force insurance companies to leave the state. The Illinois Insurance Association says the plan will likely raise premiums, reduce consumer choice and destabilize the state’s insurance market.

Formally filed by Republican Sen. Ericka Harriss, Senate Bill 3782 seeks to reform the system by creating a task force to analyze property tax foreclosures, ultimately shielding homeowners from losing the wealth they’ve worked to build in their properties in accordance with a 2023 Supreme Court decision rendering such practices unconstitutional when the debt owed on the home is lower than the equity in it.

(Springfield-jm) — When someone experiences a heart attack, the emergency protocol is universal for all genders, first responders are supposed to place the patient on their back and their hands in the center of the chest, then push hard and fast. Yet, women are 27% less likely to receive bystander CPR than men because of hesitancy to follow protocol, fueled by fears of inappropriate touching, exposing the chest or drawing accusations of sexual assault, according to the Journal of the American Heart Association. House Bill 4788, sponsored by Rep. Maura Hirschauer, D-Batavia, aims to defeat this stigma, normalizing CPR performance on women by introducing female manikins in secondary school CPR training. The idea for the legislation began with a Naperville High School student, senior Ashlynn Goldstein who is CPR certified but never encountered a female manikin. Her capstone project in high school examines why disparities exist in the performance of CPR between men and women, Illinois current statutes addressing CPR training, and how those policies are handled in schools. The bill is currently assigned to the Education Policy Committee. It requires CPR training in secondary schools to include at least one female manikin for every two male versions, starting in the 2028-29 academic year.
