A call for new amendments to the U-S Constitution hit the Illinois Statehouse

(Iroquois County-jm) - The burn ban for Iroquois County has been lifted. The burn ban was put into effect earlier this week due to dry and windy conditions. The latest drought monitor shows 80 percent of Ford County, 30 percent of Iroquois County and 100 percent of Champaign and Vermilion Counties are in level 3 out of 4 extreme drought. The other 20 percent of Ford County is in severe or moderate drought. In Iroquois County, 42 percent is in severe drought while the rest of the county is in moderate drought. There is an elevated fire danger today as temps are expected to reach the mid 60s with southerly winds gusting to 30 mph. The good news is there’s several chances of rain next week.

(Onarga-jm) — A 40-year-old Onarga man will spend the next five years in federal prison for possession of a bomb in a standoff that took place in April 2025. In July 2025, a federal grand jury returned a single-count indictment against James Nelson for possession of an unregistered destructive device. He pleaded guilty in October 2025 and was sentenced this week. His five-year prison sentence will be followed by a three-year term of supervised release. At his sentencing hearing the government played the body camera footage of the Iroquois County Sheriff’s Office detective who encountered Nelson during a routine traffic stop for a suspended registration. After the detective advised Nelson that he had a warrant for his arrest for a felony aggravated fleeing and eluding charge, Nelson refused to exit the car, which forced the detective to reach into the car to try and remove him. As the officer did this, Nelson reached into the back seat and pulled out a gray cylindrical device and told the detective it was a bomb, and he threatened to detonate it. He then refused to give up the bomb and sprinted through residential neighborhoods in Onarga with the bomb in his hand while attempting to escape. Nelson then made it to his mother’s house, where he barricaded himself for approximately eight hours while police attempted to get him to surrender. Law enforcement eventually forced their way into the attic where he was hiding and police arrested him. Law enforcement located the device, which analysis later revealed to be a functional bomb, near where Nelson was taken into custody.

(Springfield–jc)  It’s been a week since Gov. J.B. Pritzker presented his $56 billion budget proposal to the General Assembly and it's still being talked about in Springfield. (Springfield-jm) – A call for new amendments to the U-S Constitution hit the Illinois Statehouse. Supporters say Congress isn’t doing their part to reign in an out of control federal government and they are calling for Illinois lawmakers to join a new convention of states to pass reforms. It would take approval from the Illinois statehouse and at least 13 other state’s legislatures. So far 20 states have already joined. A convention of states has never been called and nothing in the constitution limits what amendments could be brought. Opponents argue it could open the Constitution to radical unintended changes.

One local Illinois Representative believes the state of Illinois needs to reign in spending, as the democrat majority in Springfield passes a higher budget each year.

(Springfield-jm) – Passenger rail service has been slowly expanding across Illinois in recent years. In 2025, provisions for new passenger lines from Chicago to Peoria and the Quad Cities were a part of the massive $1.5 billion transit bill. But some think the process isn’t moving fast enough. State Representative Rita Mayfield and State Senator Ram Villivalam think they have the answer with their Passenger Rail Planning Act. The bill itself doesn’t mandate any new construction or introduce new funding but it does lay out the clearest plan yet on what high frequency passenger rail could look like in Illinois. Mayfield’s plan would see hourly trains from Chicago go to cities like Champaign, Peoria and Rockford. But those routes would extend past the state borders, going to cities like Omaha, Kansas City, Atlanta and Toronto.

(Urbana-jm) – A partnership between researchers at the University of Illinois and researchers in India may have uncovered chemical signatures in blood that could help detect gallbladder cancer earlier. The researchers found that specific metabolic patterns may distinguish gallbladder cancer cases from noncancerous conditions, according to ACES News. This presents a noninvasive screening option to detect a cancer that normally isn’t found until it reaches later stages. While gallbladder cancer is relatively low in the U.S., it has much higher rates in regions like northern India’s Assam state, which is where the U of I’s partner researchers at Tezpur University are based. But, while rare in the U.S., it still affects about 12,000 people in the country each year, causing roughly 2,000 deaths.

Illinois House Republicans say too many businesses have shut their doors or scaled back operations due to the state's taxes

(Springfield-jm) – A new, statewide paint recycling program has already collected around 60,000 gallons of leftover paint in its first two months, among other milestones. On Tuesday, elected officials and paint industry leaders gathered at the Illinois State Capitol for a press conference highlighting the early progress of PaintCare. This program is a nonprofit organization created by the American Coatings Association that helps households and businesses recycle leftover paint. The program noted that it’s already seen a strong participation across Illinois with more than 340 drop-off site community partners. They have also collected an estimated 60,000 gallons of leftover paint in the first two months of the program, which launched on Dec. 1, 2025.

(Springfield-jm) — Illinois House Republicans say too many businesses have shut their doors or scaled back operations due to the state's taxes. Representative Brandun Schweizer of Danville told reporters in Springfield Tuesday that the closure of the Quaker Oats facility in 2024 caused 510 people to lose good-paying union jobs. Hyster-Yale Materials Handling moved over 220 jobs across the border to Indiana in December. Schweizer has filed a bill to repeal the state's corporate franchise tax to eliminate an "outdated and burdensome tax on businesses." Another plan could strengthen the research and development tax credits to increase incentives for businesses to innovate and expand in Illinois. Both proposals await review by the House Rules Committee.

(Gibson City-jm) – A Ford County grain company could be fined more than $270,000 after federal inspectors said they violated safety standards. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration opened an inspection into Gibson City’s Alliance Grain Co. last September. In a news release published on Tuesday, the U.S. Department of Labor said this came after a seasonal laborer was hurt stepping through an unguarded sump hole and onto a moving paddle style unloading conveyor. The federal safety inspectors found that the company endangered workers and violated federal law. The main issues, OSHA found, were as follows: failing to lockout/tagout machinery, failing to protect workers from stepping into the sump holes and failing to provide grain handling training to employees. OSHA also found that the company failed to issue permits prior to bin entry, utilize an observer outside the bin, and ensure the bin’s atmosphere was tested before workers entered. OSHA has proposed $276,407 in penalties.

One positive to come out of Illinois Governor J B Pritzker's budget address last week is the use of nuclear power for the states' needs.

(Springfield-jm) – Leaders with the Illinois Manufacturers Association say the recent Supreme Court ruling reigning in President Donald Trump’s tariff authority is a step in the right direction. The ruling came after six of the nine justices argued that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act does not give the President the authority to levy tariffs. Mark Denzler with the Illinois Manufacturers Association said that the stability this decision brings is reassuring. He said industry leaders are not entirely opposed to tariffs and that they can be a useful tool, but only when they’re authorized by Congress.

(Springfield-jm) – A plan moving in Springfield could create new protections for your genetic information. Sponsors believe the insurance industry should be banned from using genetic information to determine healthcare coverage. Senator Julie Morrison said Illinois needs to improve genetic nondiscrimination protections for patients. Her bill could ban insurance companies from canceling, limiting, or denying coverage or changing rates based on genetic information collected for healthcare treatment. Insurers would also be blocked from soliciting a person's genetic information, using genetic test results, or considering a patient's decisions regarding genetic information in any manner for insurance purposes. However, some argue that this bill would be detrimental to the life insurance industry's viability in Illinois. The American Council of Life Insurers said they need access to accurate and complete information about patients, including their full medical record with genetic information and family history.

(Champaign County-jm) – When voters in Champaign County head to the polls, they will see more than just candidates on the ballot. They will also be asked to weigh in on how the county should handle a nearly $2 million budget deficit. When voters step into the voting booth, they will be asked three yes-or-no questions that could shape the future of county services. On the ballot, voters are being asked whether they support raising the county sales tax — which would not apply to medicine or groceries — increasing property taxes or reducing county services. The questions are nonbinding, meaning the results will not automatically change policy. Officials say if voters reject tax increases, that will send a clear message to county leaders to make cuts as they prepare the next fiscal year budget.

(The Center Square) – Illinois lawmakers have proposed raising the state’s minimum wage to $27 per hour in 2032, but an employment policy researcher says the move could trigger drastic inflation. House Bill 5367 and Senate Bill 3821 provide for incremental increases, starting on July 1st of this year. Citing research by economists and Bureau of Labor Statistics data, Employment Policies Institute Research Director Rebekah Paxton said every one-dollar increase in the minimum wage can trigger up to 5.5% price inflation. The minimum wage bills were filed earlier this month by state Rep. Norma Hernandez, D-Melrose Park, and state Sen. Kimberly Lightford, D-Maywood. If the legislation is passed and signed by the governor, the state minimum wage would rise from the current $15 per hour to $17 per hour on July 1. Additional hikes would follow each January 1 from 2028 to 2032. After 2032, the minimum wage would automatically rise with the consumer price index, up to 2.5% annually.

(Springfield-jm) – The Clean Jobs Coalition presented new legislation last week aimed at regulating data centers in Illinois. Illinois lawmakers are considering a plan that would use taxpayer dollars to soften the impact on families who fail to meet the requirements for SNAP

(Springfield-jm) – As new federal SNAP work rules take effect this month, Illinois lawmakers are considering a plan that would use taxpayer dollars to soften the impact on families who fail to meet the requirements. House Bill 4730 would create a state run program called FRESH. The initiative would provide one-time cash payments to households whose Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits are reduced or terminated because a member of the household did not meet federally mandated work requirements. Eligible families would receive a lump-sum cash benefit on an EBT card. Payments would be calculated in one of two ways. If SNAP is reduced: The household would receive three times the difference between their former monthly SNAP amount and the reduced amount. If SNAP is terminated: The household would receive three times their final full monthly SNAP benefit.

A February campaign in Illinois is allowing students across the state an opportunity to sign up for college admissions free of charge

(Springfield-jm) – Illinois might be struggling to meet its goals of fully funding every school by 2027. But things used to be much worse. In 2017, Illinois made a change, moving to an evidence-based funding formula. That new formula, as well as billions of dollars in new funding, has helped move Illinois to 18th in the nation on state spending per student. But a global pandemic and the inflation that came after has set the state behind. A bicameral group of lawmakers is now working to get Illinois school funding back on track. They estimated that they will need around $1 billion to get it done. To drum up that new revenue, State Representative Will Davis is considering riding in the wake of another bill making waves, a proposed progressive tax on billionaires. Education advocates say that any lawmakers fighting for education is a good thing, but finding a billion dollars in new funding will be a tough hill to climb in 2026.

To qualify, a business would have to employ 50 or fewer full-time employees or earn less than $4 million annually. It would also have to be located within 25 miles of a news organization. The credit would be available for tax years 2027 through 2031, with the state capping the program at $3 million per year, awarded on a first come first serve basis. (The Center Square) – Illinois State Rep. Chris Miller argues numbers tell the story as new U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data highlight the state’s unemployment rate is outpacing that of the national average. Statistics show Illinois lost 17,000 jobs in 2025, leaving at least 302,000 residents still looking for work. At the same time across the country, employers added upward of 584,000 posts, settling the national unemployment rate at 4.4%, compared to 4.6% in Illinois. Miller insists figuring out reasons for the differences grow easier by the day. Since 2020, the state’s job market has struggled to recover from the pandemic, ending 2025 as just one of 16 states to shed jobs over the last year to now rank No. 46 in the country in job recovery over the last five years. By comparison, four of the six neighboring states (Missouri, Iowa, Indiana and Wisconsin) ended 2025 with an unemployment rate below 4%.

Higher taxes tacked onto online sports bets is driving more people to place theirs illegally

(Springfield-jm) - Illinois has had issues funding its pensions for a long, long time. Reports first appeared in the legislature back in 1917, warning of an oncoming crisis. More than 100 years later, the state is still struggling to meet those obligations. Currently, Illinois has over $140 billion in unfunded pension liability. To address that gap Governor Pritzker floated the idea of using income-tax refund surpluses to pay down pension obligations. That was back in 2024. He promises the plan would fully fund the pension system by 2048. In 2010. Illinois introduced a second tier to its pension system for new hires. They have significantly reduced benefits compared to pre-2010 tier 1 plans. A coalition of public sector unions calling themselves “We Are One” has offered an alternative for lawmakers. That plan called for lowering the retirement age and raising the pension salary cap to equal social security’s base wage.

(Springfield-jm) – Higher taxes tacked onto online sports bets is driving more people to place theirs illegally. The tax is added to every wager made before 20 million bets. According to the Sports Betting Alliance, a 15.4% decrease in sports bets are being placed in the state, which totals 6.1 million fewer than those placed in November 2024. The SBA says that more than half of the bets are $5 dollars or less. Back in 2025, a per-wager tax increased taxes from 25 to 50 cents for each bet made. The tax was enacted in July of 2025 but put into effect in September. The sports betting alliance says the tax is an incentive leading bettor to other options to place a bet because of the lower costs and no taxes. But the proper safeguard is not in place to prevent scams.
