(Springfield-jm) – A bill on Governor JB Pritzker's desk could help more veterans have affordable housing without going through government red tape. Senator Sally Turner refiled her plan this year to allow tiny homes to be exempt from the 2023 state law requiring all homes to be built with electric vehicle charging capacity. The proposal ensures that the EV charging provisions of the Electric Vehicle Charging Act do not apply to tiny homes designated for veterans who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, provided the homes are funded and built by qualified nonprofit organizations. Turner said this change could remove an unnecessary barrier and allow nonprofit organizations to focus on safe housing for veterans.

Pritzker says he is excited to welcome the team at Pure Lithium to Illinois where they'll be an excellent addition to the business landscape and burgeoning clean energy ecosystem. After completing its research and development phase in Boston, Pure Lithium is relocating to Illinois to begin production, investing $46 million and creating 50 jobs in Chicago’s Fulton Market. The move is backed by $4.4 million in state Reimagining Energy and Vehicles in Illinois Act program tax incentives, according to Crain’s calculations.  Mark Glennon, founder of Wirepoints, explained that using taxpayer money to lure companies with promises of job creation often fails to deliver real economic value.

(The Center Square) – A new Truth in Accounting report pegs Illinois as being dead last among all 50 states when it comes to financial transparency. The Transparency Score Report assesses each state based on such criteria as audit quality, clarity of retirement liabilities and how clearly finances are presented free of distortion. Researchers found Illinois’ standing is further hampered by its delay in publishing its fiscal year 2023 Annual Comprehensive Financial Reports, which offers the most accurate view of a state’s financial outlook. While no states received a top score of 100 for most transparent financial reporting, Weinberg said it’s easy to see why Illinois lands where it does in the study. The state’s 2022 report also came with a disclaimer of opinion, meaning auditors were unable to provide assurance that the financial statements were free of material misstatement.

Senator Mary Edly-Allen said law enforcement must use the utmost care when survivors come forward to report their abuse. The Bloomington-based company revealed in a July 10 statement that the plans for a substantial hike are due to rising home improvement costs and more frequent severe weather events. Inflation was one of the main factors for the hike, as the costs of materials and labor have risen, affecting the costs of repairing or rebuilding homes. The company also cited damaging storms like wind, hail and tornadoes on the rise throughout the state as another factor. In 2024, Illinois was second in the nation with $638 million in hail damage claims, just behind Texas at $1.1 billion. Illinois customers will now be required to have a minimum 1% wind/hail deductible included in their home insurance policy. Additionally, auto insurance rates in Illinois will decrease an average of 5.7%, with some customers seeing premium reductions up to 15%. The rate adjustments will apply to new and existing policies beginning July 18.

(Springfield-jm) – The Illinois Auditor General says the Pritzker administration failed to meet key equity requirements of the Climate and Equitable Jobs Act from June 2022 to June 2024. A new compliance audit shows the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity missed the mark on multiple provisions of the law moving Illinois toward 100% clean energy by 2050. There was about $30 million into these programs that were set for local grants for job opportunities and had goals to be tracked that weren't met. Auditors found Illinois did not dedicate at least one-third of the clean jobs workforce network program placements to applicants living in areas impacted by economic and environmental hardship. They also reported DCEO failed to administer the clean energy contractor incubator program for 13 community-based organizations across the state during the two-year period. Auditors also said Illinois did not start the returning residents' clean jobs training program despite the mandate taking effect in 2021. This was likely because DCEO did not select and approve administrators for the returning residents program before the end of the audit.

(The Center Square) – The countdown is on for who Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker thinks should be his lieutenant governor because the job of governor “may come” to them. If Pritzker wins a third term in November 2026, he’d be in office ahead of the 2028 presidential election cycle. Speculation continues that he’ll seek the presidency then. If he were to run for president and win, the lieutenant governor would take over as Illinois governor. Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton won’t be joining Pritzker for a potential third term. She is seeking the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Dick Durbin, who announced he’s not running again. At an unrelated event in Chicago Monday, Pritzker was asked about the diversity of the lieutenant governor candidate, whoever it may be, and if it’s a priority.
