(Washington-jm) – An Illinois Congresswoman has continued her fight addressing maternal deserts in the United States. U.S. Representative Robin Kelly of Illinois has taken action to address the maternal health crisis in rural America. She, along with Representatives from California, Pennsylvania and Washington have the introduction of the Rural Obstetrics Readiness Act. The measure would improve rural healthcare facilities with essential resources and training for obstetric care. The bill comes as a critical response to recent findings from March of Dimes. The organization found over 2 million women, of childbearing age, live in maternity care deserts. These areas do not have hospitals, birth centers, or obstetric providers and they often see higher rates of chronic conditions like hypertension and diabetes, intensifying the risks associated with pregnancy.
(Springfield–jc) –The criminal trial in the Sonya Massey murder case could be moved outside of Sangamon County. An attorney for former sheriff’s deputy Sean Grayson filed a motion to have the trial moved, arguing that Sangamon County is too close-knit and there has been too much media coverage, which could influence local jurors. Body camera footage from July shows Grayson shooting Massey after she moved a pot of boiling water from her stove after she called police to report a prowler.

(Paxton-jm) – A former Paxton pharmacist, whose license was suspended in 2023 after investigators found over 40,000 controlled substances in her home, is facing felony charges. The Ford County Chronicle reported that Jenna Lee Vogel, the former owner and head pharmacist of Doug’s Compounding Pharmacy was charged with two counts of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance. The charges allege that in March of 2023, Vogel possessed, with the intent to deliver, 100 grams or more of a substance containing hydrocodone, as well as amphetamine. In March of 2023, 43,893 controlled substances were removed from the Vogel home by investigators of the federal Drug Enforcement Administration. If convicted, Vogel faces a mandatory prison term ranging from six to 30 years for the Class X felony. The Class 3 felony Vogel is facing could lead to penalties ranging from probation to up to five years’ imprisonment.

(Springfield-jm) -- As the state of Illinois, and the nation, continues to see increasing prices on eggs, Illinoisans are searching for ways to maintain food sustainability. The U.S Department of Agriculture anticipates egg prices will increase up to 20% in 2025. In central Illinois, a dozen eggs are nearly $6, and residents are still facing the 1% grocery tax for another year. With permission from city governments throughout the state, some Illinoisans are relying on backyard chickens to provide food sustainability. In 2026, the 1% grocery tax will be left to the discretion of local governments.

(Champaign-jm) – The Champaign County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after a vehicle was taken from Hensley Township in Champaign February 23. The stolen vehicle is a white 2008 Ford Super Duty pickup truck which was pulling a rusted “Teske” single axle trailer. A green Land Pride side-by-side ATV was also stolen during the same incident. The stolen pickup truck contained approximately 12 trail cameras valued at $12,000 and a Stihl battery-powered saw. (Gibson City-jm) – The recycling program for Gibson City has been paused. City officials announced on Facebook Wednesday that they are putting their recycling collection service on hold indefinitely. This is because Andy Tull, the provider for recycling in Gibson City, is retiring after 20 years of service. Any current recycling pass holders who want refunds should contact Karen Kummerow at kbk19019@gmail.com or call her on the number on the recycling pass. (Springfield–jc) Illinois lawmakers have issued a joint letter to the White House Office of Management and Budget demanding action on the approximately One-point eight Billion dollars in funding that they said is being withheld. Springfield leaders contend that many agencies and organizations in Illinois have reported an inability to access funds, with some in danger of needing to pause operations, cancel projects, or lay off staff. They said 14 state agencies, boards, and commissions are being impacted, including the Illinois Department of Agriculture, and the Illinois Emergency Management Agency.
