The measure was approved along party lines with one Democrat voting present. Under the new bill, families would be required to tell their school districts when they decide to homeschool their children, and the parents or guardians would need to have a high school diploma or equivalent. If education authorities have concerns that children are receiving inadequate schooling, they could require parents to share evidence of teaching materials and student work. Hundreds of homeschool parents and students to the bill packed into the state capitol Wednesday morning to oppose the bill, along with over 40-thousand witness slips being posted against the bill. Representative Regan Deering of Decatur spoke on her support for the families who showed up at the capitol and on her opposition to the measure…

(Springfield-jm) – A new study shows that Illinois’ high gasoline taxes are not leading to good roads and bridges.  The Reason Foundation has released its Annual Highway Report, which examines pavement condition, deficient bridges, traffic congestion and the overall costs. Illinois fell seven spots from last year’s ranking to 36th in the country. In safety and condition categories, Illinois ranked near the bottom for urban interstate pavement condition, and in the bottom half for rural interstate condition. Illinois drivers pay the second highest gasoline taxes in the country and, by law, the proceeds are intended for transportation infrastructure. The only state with higher gas taxes is California. In spending and cost-effectiveness, Illinois ranks 45th in capital and bridge disbursements, which are the costs of building new roads and bridges and widening existing ones.

(Springfield-jm) – Illinois families face the highest state and local tax burden in the country in 2025, with residents forced to pay at least 17% of their income in taxes, according to a new report. WalletHub researchers report each Illinois household will spend an average of $13,099, or roughly 17% of their income, in 2025, adding families earning the median income of $79,004 will pay $4,472 more than the national average, or nearly 52% more. In addition, a recent survey found more than 50% of voters polled agreed if given the chance they too would move out of state with high taxes being their primary motivation.  With the state also being home to the second highest property taxes in the country, data shows almost three out of every five state residents believe the value of public service they receive is not worth what they pay in property taxes.

(Springfield-jm) – Nearly 4,000 opposition slips have been filed against a measure in Illinois to regulate homeschooling. That’s 100 times more than the nearly 40 who have filed in support. House Bill 2827 would create the Homeschool Act and require parents to inform their local school district if they decide to homeschool their children. If not, the children could be labeled truant. Proponents argue the bill would ensure children are protected from potential harm, including making sure that they are receiving adequate schooling. Under the bill proposed by Rep. Terra Costa Howard, D-Glen Ellyn, homeschool parents could face tighter restrictions that include requiring them to submit additional forms to school officials and follow specific curriculum guidelines. The bill would also require the state’s Regional Offices of Education to collect data on homeschooled children, with the findings being compiled into an annual report that includes the grade level and gender of all the students being educated in that way. The measure is set for a House Education Policy Committee hearing at 8 a.m. Wednesday at the Illinois State Capitol in Springfield.

Some Indiana lawmakers want to change their state's border and welcome 33 Illinois counties that want to leave their state

(Springfield-jm) – A plan moving in Springfield could require the Illinois State Board of Education to identify days where major school events may conflict with cultural or religious holidays. Sponsors and advocates told the Senate Education Committee that many public school students have missed major events with their classmates because they were absent or unable to attend school that day. Schools and the Illinois High School Association would have the option to use this online list as an advisory tool to help make the best schedules for their local community. The plan would not allow for school closures or excused absences due to cultural reasons but would assist school districts with planning events around the observances.
