Paris Olympics

Simone Biles and the U.S. women’s gymnastic team defeated both Italy and Brazil to win team gold yesterday. It’s the first gymnastics team gold since the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. Biles’ gold is her eighth Olympic medal surpassing Shannon Miller to make her the most decorated U.S. Olympic gymnast.

             - Ralph Loschen Award - Most Outstanding Player –  Grant Pohlman (Buckley Dutchmasters)

Grant Pohlman earned the Ralph Loschen Award for the season's Most Outstanding Player by leading the 2024 E.I. League in RBI's (26), Runs scored (23), Home Runs (4), Slugging Percentage (1.027), and OPS (1.638) in 13 games and 54 plate appearances.  Additionally, Pohlman was 7th in Batting Avg. (.459), 2nd in Doubles (5), 2nd in Triples (2) and 2nd in stolen bases (7).  The Carrollton High School and Lincoln Land Community College standout not only anchored the Dutchmaster offense but also controlled the pitching and the defense of the League Champion Dutchmasters as arguably the best catcher in the E.I. League.  Pohlman will continue his stellar collegiate career when he join NAIA national power Georgia Gwinnett College this fall.

      - Virgil Scheiwe Award - Most Outstanding Pitcher – Drew Conn (Buckley Dutchmasters)

Buckley's Drew Conn was awarded the Virgil Scheiwe Award for the Most Outstanding Pitcher for the 2024 E.I. League.  Conn appeared in 7 games, 6 as a starter, going 5 - 1 with 1.15 ERA.  Conn threw 3 complete games with 1 shutout, leading the league in Strikeouts with 58 over 39 innings.  Opponents had just a .160 on base percentage against Conn in a season where he gave up only 5 runs over his 6 starts.  Conn, who currently resides in LeRoy, IL attended Lockport High School and recently completed his collegiate career at Grand View University in Des Moines, IA and will stay on as a graduate assistant coach for the 2025 Vikings baseball team.

          - Dick Franzen Award - Batting Champion – Brayden Weaver (Royal Giants) – Avg:  .561

Brayden Weaver of the Royal Giants was this season's recipient of the Dick Franzen Award as the 2024 E.I. League Batting Champion with a .561 Batting Avg.  Weaver led the E.I. League in hits (23) over 50 Plate Appearances in Royal's 13 games.  He was denied an additional 2 games due to a forfeit.  Additionally, Weaver collected 11 RBI's, and collected 4 doubles and 1 triple while having an On Base Percentage of .633 and an OPS of 1.340.  Weaver hit from various spots in the Royal batting order and was their most consistent player on both offense and defense throughout the 2024 campaign.   Weaver is a graduate of St. Joseph / Ogden High School and recently completed his collegiate career at Illinois College where he hit .316 playing in 21 of 39 games for the 2024 Blueboys baseball team.

(Milford–jc)  the 20-24 Central Illinois Conference Swim meet was held in Milford on Saturday. Milford won the meet and Rantoul finished second followed by Paxton, Gibson City and Hoopeston.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – After two rounds of qualifying matches, the 32-player field for the singles main draw at the Neitzel Family Open is set. Seven current and former Illinois student-athletes are slated to compete in singles play, with the first round scheduled for today.

Kenta Miyoshi will begin his singles tournament run in the first match of the day on Court 1, where he will be matched up against James Tracy at 10 a.m.

Karlis Ozolins will compete on Court 1 once Miyoshi’s match ends, with the Latvia native scheduled to play No. 4-seeded Andre Ilagan.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – University of Illini Athletics has announced the promotional schedule for the 2024 Fighting Illini football season which features a season-long celebration of the 100th Anniversary of Memorial Stadium presented by Toyota.

The Fighting Illini host seven home contests, beginning Thursday, Aug. 29 against Eastern Illinois. Following the opener vs. EIU, the Illini host six Saturday home games vs. Kansas (Sept. 7), Central Michigan (Sept. 14), Purdue (Oct. 12), Michigan (Oct. 19), Minnesota (Nov. 2), and Michigan State (Nov. 16).

(Champaign–jc)  The University of Illinois Division of Intercollegiate Athletics has announced that single-game tickets for the 2024 Fighting Illini football season will go on sale to I FUND members on Monday, July 15, and to the general public on Thursday, July 18 at Noon. The single-game tickets available through July 29 are priced at preseason rates, which will be the lowest all season long.  As part of the FamILLy First campaign, Illinois is introducing a promise to ticket buyers that prices will not go lower than they are from July 18-29. There will be no ticket price reductions lower than the Preseason Pricing. The best time to buy is now.
