ROSEMONT, Ill. – Fighting Illini women's freshman point guard Destiny Jackson was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week by the league office on Monday. Jackson continued her stellar rookie campaign in Week 3 as the Illini went 2-0 with a pair of 20-point wins.Jackson averaged 11.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists, and 0.5 steals per game across a combined 56:25 minutes of action.

(Undated-jm) – Illinois is ranked No. 21 in the newest College Football Playoff Rankings, its first appearance of the season. The Illini are 7-3 after a win over Maryland, with two of three losses coming from the top two teams in the poll, Ohio State and Indiana respectively. USC is ranked No. 15, falling to Illinois 34-32 earlier in the season. Other Big Ten teams ranked include Oregon at 7 and Michigan at 18. Illinois will travel to face Wisconsin on Saturday, November 22, at 6:30 p.m. before ending the season at home against Northwestern.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill.– Illinois forward David Mirkovic (Niksic, Montenegro) is a repeat selection as Big Ten Freshman of the Week, the conference office announced Monday. He has now earned the award in each of the first two weeks to open the 2025-26 season. David Mirkovic  averaged a double-double of 19 points and 12.5 rebounds in a pair of Illini wins last week. He also notched the first 20 point-20 rebound game by an Illini player in 53 years, tallying career highs of 27 points and 21 rebounds in the win over Colgate, along with three assists.

Mirkovic and the No. 8 Fighting Illini are back in action Wednesday night in Chicago, facing No. 11 Alabama at the United Center at 8 p.m. The game airs live starting at 7pm with the pre game show on WPXN

 

(Bloomington-dg)- The I-H–S-A has announced its Hall of Fame Class and award winners. Former Crescent City and Prairie Central Boys Basketball Coach Tom Posey has received the Chuck Rolinski award. Posey will receive the award at the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association banquet.

The Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award is presented annually to the nation's best college quarterback and is the oldest and most prestigious national quarterback award. Altmyer ranks among the best quarterbacks in the nation in nearly every major category. He is sixth in the nation in passing efficiency (165.0), 10th in completion percentage (70.0), 17th in touchdown passes (19), and 26th in passing yards (2,255), while also adding 108 yards and three touchdowns on the ground.  Altmyer has guided Illinois to a 6-3 record this season.

(Chicago–jm)  –Longtime Chicago Cubs right-hander Kyle Hendricks, who won an ERA title and a World Series championship during his 12-year big league career, is retiring, according to his agent. Hendricks, 35, played last season with the Los Angeles Angels. He spent his first 11 years with Chicago where he won 97 games utilizing a changeup/sinker combination that kept hitters off-balance. He had a 3.68 ERA during his time with the Cubs, winning the ERA title in 2016, the same year Chicago won the World Series.

(Champaign–jc)  In her first week of being at the top of opposing teams' scouting reports, Illinois sophomore Berry Wallace was recognized to the Big Ten's Weekly Honor Roll after delivering back-to-back 20-point games as the Fighting Illini opened the season 2-0. Across Week 1, Wallace averaged 24.5 points, 9.0 rebounds, and 2.5 assists in 34.5 minutes per game.  Wallace opened the season with a 27-point, 11-rebound double-double in a 91-67 win over SEMO. 

 

CHAMPAIGN, Ill.– Illinois forward David Mirkovic is the inaugural Big Ten Freshman of the Week for the 2025-26 season, the conference office announced Monday. Mirkovic averaged a double-double of 18.0 points and 12.5 rebounds along with 2.5 assists in a pair of Illini wins. He shot 57% from the field and 91% from the free-throw line.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Illinois quarterback Luke Altmyer was named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday. Altmyer led Illinois to a 35-13 rout of Rutgers on Saturday with 323 yards of total offense and five total touchdowns.  Altmyer threw for 235 yards and ran for 88 yards to lead the Illinois offense. His career-high five touchdowns — four passing and one rushing — made him the first Illini to account for five touchdowns in a single game since 2013.  Altmyer's season-high 88 rushing yards came on only seven carries, as he ran for 12.6 yards per carry.
