(Urbana–jc)  Illinois head coach Bret Bielema was named to the American Heart Association's Paul "Bear" Bryant Coach of the Year watch list, the award's committee announced.  Bielema has led the Illini to a 5-2 overall record entering their off weekend. Illinois has played the #4 strength of schedule in the nation and the #1 most difficult schedule in the Big Ten, according to ESPN.  The Bear Bryant Coach of the Year award is given each January to a college football coach for contributions that make the sport better for athletes and fans alike by demonstrating grit, integrity, and a winning approach to coaching and life – both on and off the field.

(Urbana–jc)  University of  Illinois Women's Tennis continues to host the 2025 I-T-A Midwest Regional Championships  through Tuesday at the Atkins Tennis Center. All eight Illini will compete in the event through a combination of singles and doubles play. CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Illinois wide receiver Hank Beatty was named a Sporting News Midseason All-American and was added to the Biletnikoff Award watch list, it was announced Wednesday morning. Beatty is having one of the top seasons in college football, as he ranks fourth in the nation and second in the Big Ten in receiving yards (617) and 10th in the nation in all-purpose yards (812). He has caught 39 passes through seven games, helping Illinois to a 5-2 record against the #4 strength of schedule in the nation. Beatty has also been one of the most versatile players in the country, as he is the only player in the nation with a passing, rushing, receiving, and punt return touchdown this season.  Beatty and Illinois are off this weekend before a trip to Washington on Saturday, Oct. 25.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — The Illinois football team is ranked #25 in this week's USA TODAY US LBM Coaches Poll. The Illini dropped out of the AP Top 25 after 12 consecutive weeks in the poll, falling one spot outside of this week's rankings.

Illinois (5-2, 2-2 Big Ten) heads to its off weekend after playing one of the most difficult schedules in the nation. Shane van Gisbergen won his fifth consecutive race on a road or street course with a victory at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The field was cut from 12 drivers to 8 after the race. The eight drivers advancing in the playoffs are Ryan Blaney, Joey Logano, Chase Elliott, Kyle Larson, William Byron, Denny Hamlin, Christopher Bell and Chase Briscoe.

(Undated-jm) – Miami moved back to number 2 in the Associated Press college football poll on Sunday, while Texas and Penn State -- the preseason numbers 1 and 2, respectively -- fell all the way out of the Top 25 for the first time since 2022 after losses to unranked opponents. Number 1 Ohio State was dominant in its win over Minnesota. Oregon comes in at number 3, Ole Miss at number 4 and Texas A & M is number 5. Indiana is ranked 7th, Michigan 15th and Illinois is up to 17th. The Illini host Ohio State Saturday at Geis Memorial Stadium while Indiana travels to Eugene to take on the Oregon Ducks.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Illinois quarterback Luke Altmyer was named the Paul Hornung Award Player of the Week as the most versatile player in college football during Week 5. Altmyer led #23 Illinois to a 34-32 win over #21 USC. 

Altmyer accounted for four touchdowns (2 passing, 1 rushing, and 1 receiving) and 359 yards of offense in the win. He became the first player to have 300+ passing yards, a passing touchdown, a rushing touchdown, and a receiving touchdown in a Big Ten game in at least 30 years. .
