Paxton Buckley Loda’s Tyler Cole was named to the all-tournament team. On the girls side. Tri Valley beat Gibson City Melvin Sibley in the championship game. GCMS Lily Sizemore was tournament MVP. Lizzie Grioux and Sophia Ray were also named to the all tournament team.

(Champaign-jm) – Illinois football is hard at work in recruiting the transfer portal. On Tuesday, the Illini signed Wisconsin linebacker transfer Leon Lowery. Lowery comes to Champaign for his sixth year of college football. He spent four seasons at Syracuse before joining the Badgers for the 2024 campaign. He racked up 46 tackles in 2023 with 3.5 sacks, before 29 tackles and one sack in 2024.

(Chicago-jm) – The New York Yankees acquired outfielder/first baseman Cody Bellinger in a trade with the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday. Chicago also sent cash considerations to New York, which shipped right-hander Cody Poteet to the Cubs to complete the deal. Sources told ESPN that the Yankees will receive $5 million to offset Bellinger's salary -- he will make $27.5 million in 2025 and has a player option for $25 million in 2026. Chicago will pay $2.5 million to cover part of Bellinger's $27.5 million salary this season. The remaining $2.5 million will either cover the contract buyout if Bellinger does not exercise his player option or go toward his $25 million salary in 2026, according to a source.

Jakucionis is co-recipient of the league's weekly honor, along with Rutgers' Dylan Harper. Jakucionis averaged 23.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 3.5 assists against a pair of top-20 teams

Led the Illini to victory over #20 Wisconsin, scoring a career- and game-high 24 points. He also extended his Illini freshman record for consecutive 20-point games to five in a row. Jakucionis becomes the second Illini to earn Big Ten Freshman of the Week this season, following Will Riley in week one.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Illinois quarterback Luke Altmyer on Saturday announced his return to the Fighting Illini football team for the 2025 season. Altmyer made the announcement during a timeout at the Illinois men's basketball game against No. 1-ranked Tennessee on the court in front of a sold-out crowd at State Farm Center. Altmyer led #20 Illinois to one of its best seasons in program history in 2024. The Fighting Illini  appeared in the AP Top 25 for 11 weeks, won nine or more regular season games for the eighth time in Illini history, and were ranked by the College Football Playoff selection committee for a program-record four straight weeks to end the season. Illinois will go for win #10 at the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl, which would tie a program record for wins in a season.

MIAMI – The Illinois distance swimming crew completed the CSCAA Open Water Nationals on Sunday  from Florida International University. Three swimmers made the trip to Miami to swim the 5k: senior Paloma Canos Cervera, junior Adelaide Reaser and sophomore Liv Dorshorst. They placed 10th as a trio out of 19 teams.

Pat Bryant is ranked second in the Big Ten in receiving yards  with 984 and tied for first in receiving touchdowns (10) during the regular season. He led the nation with three game-winning touchdown catches at the end of games this season.  Xavier Scott  led the Illinois' defense this season and is tied for second in the Big Ten in interceptions with 4 and is a semifinalist for the Paycom Jim Thorpe Award, given to the nation's best defensive back.

Tennessee is the new No. 1 in men's college basketball after a massive shakeup in the AP Top 25. The Vols received 58 first-place votes from a 62-person media panel Monday to reach No. 1 for the first time since the 2018-19 season. Tennessee climbed two spots from last week after Kansas lost twice and Auburn fell to No. 4 Duke. The Tigers remained No. 2 and received three first-place votes. (Columbus) No. 21 Illinois Women opened Big Ten play with a ranked road loss to No. 12 Ohio State, 83-74, on Sunday afternoon. The Fighting Illini held leads in both the first and second quarters, but a strong finish to the second period of play from the Buckeyes proved to be the difference as the Fighting Illini dropped their conference opener. Genesis Bryant led the Illini with 22 points while going 8-for-14 from the field and 4-for-8 from 3-point range.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Following a nine-win regular season, Illinois will begin accepting deposits for new season ticket holders for the 2025 season, the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics announced. Deposits are now open, giving new season ticket holders their first chance to guarantee themselves a seat at Memorial Stadium. Current 2024 Illinois football season ticket holders do not need to make a deposit. While demand continues to increase quickly as Illinois has built itself into a top-25 program, Illinois will stay committed to its Fighting Illini FamILLy by offering affordable access points to all fans in 2025.

(Champaign–jc)  –Illinois running back Aidan Laughery was named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.  Laughery ran for 172 yards and three touchdowns, both career-high marks, to lead Illinois to a 38-28 win over Northwestern at Wrigley Field. He scored on runs of 64, 31, and 30 yards, while averaging over 14 yards per carry. Laughery is a graduate of Gibson City Melvin Sibley High School.
