(Champaign–jc)  –  Illinois quarterback Luke Altmyer was named to the Davey O'Brien Award's Great 8 for his performance leading Illinois past #22 Nebraska. Altmyer was also added to the official Davey O'Brien Award Watch List for the season. The National QB of the Week will be announced by the Dave O'Brien Award on Tuesday at 11 a.m. CT. Alltmyer led then-#24 Illinois to a 31-24 (OT) win at #22 Nebraska by throwing for four touchdowns on 21-of-27 passing and amassing 236 total yards of offense.   

(Iroquois County–jc)  The Iroquois County Golf Tournament scheduled for Monday has been postponed to Wednesday, October 9, same time and place  at Shewami Golf Course near Sheldon.  The postponement is the result of Cissna Park needing time to navigate the difficult situation of losing a student this past weekend who was one of the golfers set to participate in the tournament.

Chris Buescher won Sunday at Watkins Glen leading a string of five non playoff drivers to the finish in a race marred by late wrecks,  shredded tires and busted parts among the championship contenders. Chase Briscoe entered the playoff standings at 16th, finished 6th. Austin Cindric finished 10th, only the second playoff driver in the top 10. Four drivers will be cut from the field Saturday night at Bristol. Denny Hamlin, Brad Keselowski, Martin Truex Jr. and Harrison Burton are the bottom four drivers.

(Champaign–jc)  – Illinois cornerback Xavier Scott was named the Chuck Bednarik Award National Player of the Week by the Maxwell Football Club and was also tabbed as the Walter Camp FBS National Defensive Players of the Week presented by The Heights Group at Morgan Stanley. Both awards were announced Tuesday. Scott forced three turnovers in Illinois' 23-17 win over #19 Kansas, helping the Illini to their highest ranked non conference win since 1995. Scott had two interceptions, one returned for a touchdown, one forced fumble, 1.0 sack, and eight solo tackles against Kansas. Scott, who also took home Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honors.Scott and the Illini are back in action for Homecoming this weekend against Central Michigan. Kickoff is scheduled for Saturday at 11 a.m. CT at Memorial Stadium.

(Champaign–jc)  –National hero and former Illini football student-athlete Tim McCarthy has been selected as the second recipient of the Spirit of the Illini Award, which was created by the University of Illinois Division of Intercollegiate Athletics one year ago to honor an individual who has exemplified character, has made significant contributions to the Fighting Illini FamILLy, and has helped unify the community with excellence and honor. McCarthy will be honored during Homecoming weekend, culminating with his presentation to the Illini faithful at halftime of the football game against Central Michigan on Sept. 14, when he will join the Marching Illini in its performance of the alma mater.

 McCarthy was a four-year member of the Illini football team and two-year letterwinner in 1969 and 1970. i. He would later become a Secret Service agent and an American hero by taking a bullet for President Ronald Reagan.
