PBL Panthers Boys Basketball Coach Quenton Hatfill. The Panthers will take on the Ridgeview Mustangs this afternoon in the 3rd place bracket. We will have that game following Illinois basketball.

 

(Champaign-jm) – Former Illini basketball player Dave Downey has died. Downey, a three-time team MVP for the Illini from the 1961 through 1963 season, has held the Illini single-game scoring record for 62 years. He died on Saturday at the age of 84. In 1963, Downey was Illinois’ all-time leading scorer and rebounder with 1,360 points and 790 rebounds, respectively. These numbers have since been surpassed, but his career scoring average ranks fifth in UI history, while his rebounding average ranks third.

(Undated-jm) – Three Chicago Bears players have been selected to the Pro Bowl. Safety Kevin Byard, left guard Joe Thuney and center Drew Dahlman were selected. Green Bay Packers defensive lineman Micah Parsons was also selected to represent the NFC. Running Back Jonathan Taylor and guard Quenton Nelson of the Indianapolis Colts were selected to represent the AFC.

 

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Former Illini All-American Devon Witherspoon was selected to his third straight Pro Bowl, the NFL announced Tuesday. Witherspoon joined Dick Butkus as the only Illini in program history to earn Pro Bowl selections in each of their first three seasons in the NFL. 

Witherspoon is the seventh Illini in program history to make three or more Pro Bowls during their NFL careers.

(Undated-jm) – Arizona remains the top team in the country in the latest college basketball poll. Michigan is #2 followed by Iowa State, UConn and Purdue round out the top 5. Other Big Ten teams ranked include Michigan State at #9, Nebraska at #13, Illinois at #20, USC at #24 and Iowa at #25. On the women’s side of the basketball, UConn remains the #1 ranked team followed by Texas, South Carolina, UCLA and LSU round out the top 5. (St. Louis-jm) – The Boston Red Sox are acquiring first baseman Willson Contreras in a trade with the St. Louis Cardinals, sources told ESPN. The 33-year-old Contreras, a three-time All-Star, hit .257 with a team-leading 20 home runs and 80 RBIs in 135 games for the Cardinals last season. The former catcher, who had a full no-trade clause in his contract, has two years left and is owed $36.5 million and a $5 million buyout for the 2028 season. Boston is receiving $8 million from the Cardinals to cover part of his remaining salary. Right-hander Hunter Dobbins is the headliner in the package going to St. Louis for Contreras. The Cardinals also will be receiving minor league right-handers Yhoiker Fajardo and Blake Aita.

 

(Chicago-jm) – Japanese slugger Munetaka Murakami is joining the Chicago White Sox, landing the home run record-setter in Nippon Professional Baseball with a rebuilding team making its first free agent splash in years. The White Sox announced Murakami's addition Sunday, with sources telling ESPN the sides agreed on a two-year, $34 million contract.

(Champaign–jc)  Illinois guard Keaton Wagler is Big Ten Freshman of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.  Wagler averaged 21 points and 7.5 assists in a pair of games, shooting 50% from the field, 54% from 3-point range and 92% from the free throw line. This marks the third time through the first six weeks of the season that an Illini has been named Big Ten Freshman of the Week, joining two accolades for forward David Mirkovic. Wagler and the No. 18 Fighting Illini return to action Monday, facing Missouri in the annual McBride Homes Braggin' Rights Game, set for 7 p.m. .

(Champaign–jc)   Led by a 65 percent clip from 3-point range, the Illini women took down North Texas, 81-69, at State Farm Center on Sunday afternoon. Now 10-1 this season, the Fighting Illini have tied their best start in program history and are off to their best start in over 40 years. The Orange and Blue had three players score in double figures, led by Berry Wallace's career-high 28 points and nine rebounds. 


(Illini-jm) – Fighting Illini football fans received both good news and bad news from the team over the weekend. For the bad news Gabe Jacas  and JC Davis announced they will go to the NFL draft and won’t play in the Illini’s bowl game against Tennessee. Luke Altmeyer announced he will play in the game. Safety Matthew Bailey will be out for the bowl game as well after having surgery, and is weighing a decision to make the jump to the NFL as well.

 

(Champaign-jm) – Former Illinois football head coach Mike White has died. White coached the Illini from 1980-87, leading Illinois to a Big Ten title and Rose Bowl appearance in 1983, coaching the likes of Dave Wilson, Tony Eason, Jack Trudeau and David Williams. He left Illinois with a 47-41-3 record. White had other head coaching stops with the University of California and in the NFL with the Oakland Raiders.

 

(St. Louis-jm) – Right-hander Dustin May and the St. Louis Cardinals are in agreement on a free agent contract, pending a physical, sources told ESPN on Saturday. He was traded from the Los Angeles Dodgers to the Boston Red Sox and together went 7-11 with a 4.96 ERA.

(Undated–jc)  –The Lady Panthers of Paxton Buckley Loda fell to the Manteno Panthers 34 to 10 last night. The sectional final was held at Prairie Central Middle School in Forrest. 

Congratulations to the Lady Panthers for winning an 8-3A Regional this year. 

The Saint Malachy girls 8th grade team won their sectional game last night and are heading to the Elite 8 in State on Saturday. The Tigers won 33 to 20.

On Saturday at Clinton Junior High School, the Tigers will face Carrollton Saint Johns. Game time is 11-30am on Saturday in Clinton

Also in class 8-1-A Oakland Lake Crest beat Prairie View Ogden 40 to 12. Another great season for the Lady Mustangs.

COLUMBIA, Mo. – A 21-point night from Gretchen Dolan helped lead the Fighting Illini to a gritty 70-62 McBride Home Braggin' Rights road win over Missouri on Wednesday night. The victory saw Illinois improve to 9-1, the program's best start through 10 games since 1981-82, when the Orange and Blue began 10-0. The Illini never trailed in the contest.Destiny Jackson filled the stat sheet with nine points, a career-high nine assists, five rebounds, and a career-most five steals. Cearah Parchment chipped in with nine points, eight rebounds and two steals. Maddie Webber continued to prove her value off the bench with 11 points, three rebounds, and a steal.

The PBL 8th grade girls defeated Iroquois West 37-19 in regional championship action. They will play Manteno Wednesday at Prairie Central. Rantoul’s St. Malachy defeated Rossville Alvin 26-18 in their regional. They will play Ford Heights Cottage Grove Wednesday at St. Malachy. Ford Heights Cottage Grove defeated Milford 33-28.

 

In 7th grade girls regional action, Ford Heights Cottage Grove defeated Milford 32-26. Rantoul’s St. Malachy defeated Cissna Park 16-12. St. Malachy and Ford Heights Cottage Grove will play Wednesday for the sectional title. Forest Prairie Central defeated GCMS 19-10. Undefeated St. Joseph defeated Paris Mayo 21-16.

The rookie was recognized as the Big Ten's Freshman of the Week the league office announced Monday. Nashville-jm) – Illinois football has learned its destination for its second-straight bowl game appearance. The Illini will head to Nashville to play in the Liberty Mutual Music City Bowl on December 30 at 4:30 p.m., played at Nissan Stadium, home of the Tennessee Titans. Illinois will play Tennessee out of the SEC. The Volunteers finished the year with an 8-4 record, falling to Vanderbilt in the regular season finale. This will be the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
