(Los Angeles–jc)  –Number. 25 Illinois battled with the U S C Trojans but came up short in a 76-66 road loss to No. 4 USC on Sunday afternoon.The Fighting Illini turned a double-digit deficit into a brief lead in the third quarter, but the home side pulled away in the second half to secure the win. Genesis Bryant led the Illini  with 22 points while knocking down five 3-pointers. Playing all 40 minutes once again, Kendall Bostic turned in her 18th double-double of the season after recording 18 points and 16 rebounds, Making her second-straight start, Berry Wallace scored in double figures for the 10th time this season, registering 14 points while logging a career-high 40 minutes. .

LOS ANGELES – No. 25 Illinois fought from start to finish but fell on the road to No. 3 UCLA, 70-55, on Thursday night at Pauley Pavilion. The Fighting Illini outscored the Bruins, 21-11, in the third quarter to reduce their deficit to four, but it was not enough to take down UCLA on its home court as the Orange and Blue's program-record eight-game Big Ten winning streak came to a close.

Adalia McKenzie led the Illini scoring attack with 18 points. In her first-career start, Berry Wallace finished with 13 points while going 2-for-4 from behind the arc. The true freshman also recorded six rebounds.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The National Junior College Athletic Association Division II Men’s Basketball Championship returns to Danville, March 17-22,, for the 32nd straight year. The Mary Miller Center on the campus of Danville Area Community College has hosted the championship since 1994. The tournament will feature 20 teams and 32 total games in a false double-elimination format. The 2025 championship marks the second year of the 20-team field, with 16 automatic qualifiers and four at-large selections. A national champion will be crowned on Saturday, March 22

(Wisconsin–jc)   A loss last night by the University of Illinois to the Wisconsin Badgers  loss snaps Illinois' streaks of nine straight wins over Wisconsin and four straight wins against the Badgers in Madison dating back to 2019. Wisconsin won 95 to 74. Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn poured in a team-high 17 points while dishing out a career-high five assists and tying a career-best mark with four rebounds. 

Ben Humrichous connected on three 3-pointers and finished with 13 points, four rebounds, two assists, a block, and a steal.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas -- Illinois baseball used a six-run eighth to rally past Abilene Christian ) and earn a series win, on Sunday, at Whataburger Field.

Greg LaChance's two-out, two-run, single broke a 2-2 tie in the eighth and Drake Westcott followed by crushing a two-run shot, his second home run in as many games, to give the Illini some insurance. Julius Sanchez dazzled on the mound in his first start of the season, tossing 7.0 innings of one-run ball to go along with a career-high 10 strikeouts. The Illini are 2 and 1 on the season. 

 

NASCAR 

William Byron raced to his second straight Daytona 500 win, dodging a string of late race wrecks that knocked out a chunk of contenders. Byron was in ninth place with one lap to go when he was able to race near the outside wall to escape the chaos. Tyler Reddick finished 2nd, followed by Jimmie Johnson, Chase Briscoe and John Hunter Nemechek.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Illinois women used a big fourth quarter to take down Penn State, 67-55, at State Farm Center on Thursday night. Now 20-5 overall and 10-4 in Big Ten play this season, the Fighting Illini outscored the Nittany Lions in the final frame, 24-7, en route to their seventh win in a row. Playing all 40 minutes, Adalia McKenzie recorded a team-high 19 points . McKenzie ultimately ended the evening with eight rebounds,  and two assists. Genesis Bryant finished in double figures for the seventh game in a row, logging 18 points while going 4-for-9 from 3-point range.  Jasmine Brown-Hagger added 10 points. (Champaign–jc)  – Illinois freshman point guard Kasparas Jakucionis is on the Late Midseason Top 20 Watch List for the John R. Wooden Award, presented by Principal, the Los Angeles Athletic Club announced Tuesday. Jakucionis is having a brilliant rookie campaign for the Fighting Illini. He is averaging 15.6 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 5.2 assists on the season. Jakucionis is one of only four freshmen on the 20-player Wooden Award late midseason list, as well as one of four players from the Big Ten conference.

MADISON, Wis. – Illinois women earned its fifth-straight road win and sixth-consecutive victory overall with a 74-51 triumph over Wisconsin on Sunday afternoon. The Fighting Illini led by as many as 26 in the contest, ultimately prevailing by 23 to improve to 19-5 overall and 9-4 in Big Ten play this season.Adalia McKenzie made two 3-pointers, her first outing this season with multiple makes from beyond the arc, and finished with a team-high 18 points. Totaling 12 points across the opening 20 minutes of play, McKenzie ended the afternoon with eight rebounds, six assists, and a steal.Despite not playing in the fourth quarter, Genesis Bryant registered 11 points while going 8-for-8 from the free throw line. Bryant also dished out a team-most seven assists and grabbed five rebounds. Kendall Bostic secured the 50th double-double of her career with 15 points and a team-best 11 rebounds. Notching three assists, Bostic also had a big day defensively with three steals and two blocks.

 

 

(Champaign=--jc)  – A Celebration of Life for University of Illinois pitching coach Mark Allen will be held Tuesday,  at 4 p.m. in the Colonnades Club at Memorial Stadium. Requested attire is business casual.  The event is open to the public. He passed away Wednesday at the age of 49. During his career, Allen totaled over 25 seasons coaching and scouting in collegiate and professional baseball, impacting the careers and lives of hundreds of pitchers. He spent five seasons as Illinois' pitching coach.

 

 

URBANA, Ill. – Fighting Illini junior Violeta Martinez earned ranked wins on both the doubles and singles courts as Illinois concluded play in the 2025 ITA Team Indoor Championships. Third-seeded and No. 6 ranked UCLA won the match, 4-1.

Illinois moves to 2-5 on the season and 2-4 at home this season as the squad continues to work through its gauntlet of a schedule. The Fighting Illini are in the midst of a nine-match stretch against Power 4 opponents, not shying away from the toughest out-of-conference competition.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Fighting Illini fifth-year forward Kendall Bostic has been named one of the top 10 candidates for the Katrina McClain Award Power Forward of the Year, the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame announced earlier today.

One of two honorees from the Big Ten, Bostic is averaging 16.0 points, 11.3 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and 34.5 minutes per game across her final year of collegiate basketball. She has started 115 consecutive games since transferring to Illinois ahead of her sophomore season and now holds the program's career rebounding record.  Bostic is the first player in program history to be named a top 10 candidate for any Basketball Hall of Fame's Naismith Starting 5 award.

 

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Illinois pitching coach Mark Allen passed away Wednesday at the age of 49, his family announced. He is survived by his wife, Angela, and daughters, Skylar and Avery.  During his career, Allen totaled over 25 seasons coaching and scouting in collegiate and professional baseball, impacting the careers and lives of hundreds of pitchers. He spent five seasons as Illinois' pitching coach from 2020-24.  Illini baseball coach Dan Hartlieb says it is a sad and difficult day for the Illini, along with family and friends.

 

(Bloomington–jc)  – The Illinois High School Association has announced its Officials of the Year in 22 I-H-S-A sports.  To be considered for this honor, an official must first be nominated by an Officials Association recognized by the IHSA or by an IHSA administrator. IHSA staff members then vote on the winners based on factors such as character, skill as an official, and levels worked in the IHSA State Series. In the category of boys basketball, Rich Doman of Gibson City was named official of the year. Congratulations to Rich Doman on the honor from the I-H-S-A. This year’s winners will be recognized during the 2025 IHSA Officials Conference, which will be held July 11-12 in Normal, Illinois.

 

(Charlotte–jc)  – The NASCAR Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will enshrine the Class of 2025 – Carl Edwards, Ralph Moody, and Ricky Rudd. In addition, Dr. Dean Sicking will be honored as the recipient of the Landmark Award for Outstanding Contributions to NASCAR and Mike Harris with the Squier-Hall Award for NASCAR Media Excellence. The ceremony is set for this evening starting at 6pm.

The Kokomo, Ind., native was one of 68 players appearing on the watch list that represented 51 different programs and 15 conferences.Bostic is averaging 16.0 points, 11.3 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and 34.5 minutes per game across her final year of collegiate basketball. CHAMPAIGN, Ill.– Illinois forward Will Riley is Big Ten Freshman of the Week, the conference office announced Monday. Riley led the Illini in a pair of games last week, averaging 20.0 points and 3.5 rebounds while shooting 52% from the field, including 45.5% from 3-point range. Riley scored a team-high 24 points in the comeback win over Ohio State, making 7-9 shots and a career-high nine free throws on 12 attempts, along with three rebounds. His 24 points tie the most by a freshman off the bench in a conference game this season.

 

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – For the third time in her career, Genesis Bryant has earned Big Ten Player of the Week honors, the conference office announced Monday. Putting together three phenomenal performances in Illinois' 3-0 week, Bryant led the Fighting Illini to two road wins in addition to the program's first-ever win over Maryland – marking Illinois' third win over an AP Top-25 ranked team this season.

Bryant averaged 20.3 points, 3.7 rebounds, 2.33 assists, 0.67 steals, 36.6 minutes, and a 1.17 assist-turnover ratio across the 3-0 week. She shot 44.4% (20-for-45) from the field, 55.6% (10-for-18) from 3-point range, and 91.7% from the free throw line.

 

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Illinois freshman guard Kasparas Jakucionis is on the Oscar Robertson Trophy Midseason Watch List, the U.S. Basketball Writers Association announced on Monday. Jakucionis is having a standout freshman campaign for the Fighting Illini. He is averaging 15.6 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 5.5 assists on the season, shooting 47% from the field, 35% from 3-point range, and 83.5% from the foul line. A two-time Big Ten Freshman of the Week honoree, Jakucionis has eight 20-point games, tying the UI freshman season record.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Illinois Women's Basketball team secured its first ranked road win since 2019 with a dramatic 66-65 victory over No. 14 Maryland at XFINITY Center on Sunday afternoon. Genesis Bryant knocked down two free throws with six seconds remaining to give the Fighting Illini their first-ever win against the Terrapins and their third ranked triumph of the season. Playing all 40 minutes, Bryant finished with a game-high 20 points while making two 3-pointers and going a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line. Scoring 10 points in the third quarter alone, Bryant also amassed four rebounds, two assists, and a steal.
