CHAMPAIGN, Ill.– The Big Ten Conference has revealed the breakdown of conference opponents for the 2025-26 men's basketball season. For the eighth straight year, Big Ten teams will once again compete in a 20-game conference schedule. The 18-team Big Ten schedule format calls for each school to play three teams both home and away, and 14 teams once; seven home and seven away.

The Illini will be home only with, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Oregon, Rutgers, Washington, and Wisconsin The Illini will be away only with,  Iowa, Michigan State, Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue, UCLA,  and USC. Illinois plays home and away with– Maryland, Nebraska, and Northwestern

 

(Kankakee-jc)  –Kankakee Community College honored Roy Cordes, affectionately known as The Voice of the Cavaliers, at a retirement reception this week. Cordes has served as the college’s sports announcer since 2008, lending his enthusiastic voice to KCC athletics for over 15 years.

(Urbana–jc)  –Head coach Brad Underwood announced Monday that Andrej Stojakovic has signed a Big Ten Athletics Aid Agreement with the University of Illinois and will join the Fighting Illini program as a transfer. Stojakovic is a 6-foot-7-inch, 205-pound guard from Carmichael, California. He will join the Illini as a junior after a breakout year at Cal this past season prior to beginning his career at Stanford in 2023-24.As a true freshman at Stanford, Stojakovic started 10 of 32 games, averaging 7.8 points and 3.4 rebounds. He had nine double-digit scoring games, led by a season-high 20-point effort vs. USC .

Illinois' best and brightest student-athletes were honored in person at The Oskees on Monday night from State Farm Center. The Oskees is an annual all-sports celebration recognizing first-year letter jacket recipients, graduating student-athletes, and all Fighting Illini who have excelled both athletically and academically. Jackson Buchanan of golf and Raina Terry of volleyball took home the night's highest honor, the prestigious Big Ten Medal of Honor. Established in 1915, the Big Ten Medal of Honor is awarded annually to one male and one female student-athlete from the graduating class of each member institution who has demonstrated excellence on and off the field throughout their college career.

NFL Football

The NFL Draft is over and Fighting Illini Pat Bryant was the only Illinois player to hear his name called, when he was selected in the 3rd round by the Denver Broncos. Three other Former Illini did get undrafted free agent offers though. On Saturday, Defensive Lineman TeRah Edwards signed with the LA Chargers and outside linebacker Seth Coleman signed with the Seattle Seahawks. On Sunday, Wide Receiver Zakhari Franklin inked a deal with the Las Vegas Raiders.

NFL Draft

Not a surprise, Miami quarterback Cam Ward was selected by the Tennessee Titans with the first pick in the Draft. The Jacksonville Jaguars traded up from 5 to 2 to select Colorado Cornerback/Wide Receiver Travis Hunter with the 2nd pick. Hunter is thought to be the best athlete in the 2025 draft. The New York Giants selected Abdul Carter from Penn St. with the 3rd pick. The Raiders took Boise St. running back Ashton Jeanty. The Chicago Bears took Michigan tight end Colston Leonard with their 10th pick. The Green Bay Packers chose Texas wide receiver Matthew Golden.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill.– Illinois Athletics is ranked 25th in the 2024-25 Learfield Directors' Cup following today's release of the final winter standings. Illinois has amassed 473 points so far this school year. Included in that score is 389.5 points from the winter season, the 11th-highest winter point total recorded among the 261 schools ranked in the Division I standings. The Big Ten leads all conferences with nine teams ranked in the current top 25.

(Chicago-dg)-Steve “Mongo”McMichael, a star defensive tackle for the Chicago Bears 1985 Super Bowl Championship team has died following a long battle with ALS. He was 67. He was an All Pro in 1985 and 1987 and inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2024.

(Urbana–jc)  –Illinois Athletics announced Tuesday that it will not renew the contract of women’s gymnastics head coach Nadalie Walsh.  Walsh led the Illini for the past eight years, and her contract will expire in August. Illinois finished sixth at the Big Ten Championships and third in round two at NCAA Regionals this past season. The team’s highest conference finish under Walsh was second place in 2019. During the Walsh era, Illinois totaled three All-Americans, crowned four Big Ten individual event champions, and had 23 All-Big Ten selections. Walsh was named WCGA Region 3 Co-Head Coach of the Year in 2022, guiding Illinois to a final national ranking of 19th. A national search will begin immediately to secure the next leader of Fighting Illini Women’s Gymnastics.

(Urbana–jc)  -– Fighting Illini softball's Keirys Click was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week following an impactful weekend on the diamond that helped Illinois to a series win over Michigan State, the league office announced this week.  Click's big weekend helped her become the first Illini to earn a Big Ten softball weekly award since 2022.  The Hobart, Indiana, native went 3-for-8 across the series, including two home runs, three hits, three RBI, and three runs scored. She also drew two walks and a hit by pitch across the weekend. Click's home runs marked her second and third of the season.

WNBA Draft

The WNBA Draft was held last night. UConn guard Paige Bueckers was the #1 pick going to the Dallas Wings. Big Ten players taken were USC forward Kiki Iriafen 4th, Maryland guard Shayanne Sellers 17th, Iowa guard Lucy Olsen 23rd, USC Center Rayah Marshall 25th, Michigan guard Jordan Hobbs 34th and Ohio St. Forward Taylor Thierry 36th.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill.– Illinois freshmen Kasparas Jakucionis  and Will Riley  announced Monday that they are declaring for the NBA Draft. 

Jakucionis led the Illini in scoring and assists, averaging 15.2 ppg and 4.7 apg, and was third on the team in rebounding at 5.7 rpg. He equaled the most points ever scored by an Illini freshman, totaling 494 during his 33 starts, and set UI rookie season records shooting 84.5% from the free throw line Jakucionis was a Big Ten All-Freshman Team selection, first-team NABC All-Great Lakes District, second-team All-Big Ten by AP, and third-team All-Big Ten by the league coaches and media.

 Riley, meanwhile, averaged 12.6 points, 4.1 rebounds and 2.2 assists while playing in all 35 games. He registered double figures in 13 of the final 15 games, averaging 15.9 ppg over that stretch with five 20-point performances. Riley burst onto the scene by scoring 31 points vs. Eastern Illinois to set the Illini freshman debut scoring record. His instant offense for much of the season came from off the bench, culminating in his selection as Big Ten Sixth Man of the Year by the league coaches.

Kyle Larson led 411 of 500 laps and scored an emotional win on Sunday with a dominating NASCAR cup series victory at Bristol Motor Speedway. Larson picked up his second Cup win of the season. Denny Hamlin finished second, Ty Gibbs was third, followed by Chase Briscoe and Ryan Blaney.

Vytas Valincius was the lone Illini to put together a multi-hit effort, going 2-for-3 at the plate with a walk. Payton Hutchings turned 1.2 scoreless innings in relief, allowing just one hit. CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Illinois baseball returns to Illinois Field for a midweek contest vs. in-state rival Illinois State on Tuesday. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. CT. The Fighting Illini will be playing eight of their next nine ball games in Champaign. The Orange and Blue claimed their first Big Ten series win of the season over the weekend thanks to Friday's doubleheader sweep over Michigan State at McLane Stadium. Illinois used big innings late in each game of the twinbill to earn its first doubleheader sweep of the season. The Illini have started the season 5-1 at home, which includes a 3-0 record in midweek action.
